On Oct. 30th, about 150 people attended theFACTS' 2nd Annual Fundraising dinner in Los Angeles at the Hacienda Hilton. Dennis Duncan, Chair of Los Angeles chapter of FACTS, was master of cermonies.

One of the honored speakers was Michael J. Moore (producer of "The Legacy" -- a documentary on the creation of the Cal. 3-Strikes law). Michael talked extensively about the media monster that helped create the 3-strikes law and how we are still up against a big fight to try to change this law. Click here for some of his comments.

Ruthie Gilmore

For the second year in a row, Ruthie Gilmore was asked to speak and part of the focus of her speech was to inform the crowd to vote "no" about Proposition 21 (Juvenile Crime Initiative) on March 7, 2000. Click here to hear some of her comments.

Several people were honored at the dinner for their special contributions in helping to fight against the Three Strikes law. Included among the honorees was the Liberty Hill foundation--of which Wally Marks accepted the award on their behalf.

Joseph P. Charney

Joseph Charney, a deputy district attorney in Los Angeles, was honored for his special efforts in the fight to amend 3-strikes as he had written an opinion piece in the LA Times, spoke at a legislative hearing, and had made a special trip to Sacramento for lobbying (all on behalf of amending the 3-strikes law).

Jamal Goree, accepted an award on behalf of Carl Nelson and himself and the morning radio program Frontpage.

Wilander Richman Keith Morgan

Recongized for their special efforts as FACTS members in Los Angeles were Wilander Richman and Keith Morgan.

Also recognized for their special efforts were Dwight Smith of Orange County and Steve St. Onge of Santa Barbara. Steve, having once faced the 3-Strikes law gave some insightful comments about how the 3-strikes law does not act as a deterrent. Click here for Steve's comments.
