Sept. 22nd: Cal. 3-Strikes Project Announces Public Initiative to Amend
3-Strikes Law
At 1:00 p.m. on Sept. 22 at the Criminal Courts Building in Los
Angeles, Valerie Monroe and Jan Tucker announced that the Cal. 3-Strikes
Project had submitted a public initiative to the Attorney General's office that
would amend the California 3-Strikes law as follows:
1. The law would
not be applicable to nonviolent and non-serious offenses.
2. The law would
not apply to juvenile adjudications.
3. The amendments would be applicable
to everybody who has already been sentenced under the law and it would be
applicable to both 2nd strikers (who received double their sentence) and
3-strikers (who received a minimum of 25 years-to-life).

Jan Tucker and Valerie Monroe are the co-sponors of the 3-strikes
initiative. |
Tony Muhammad of the Nation of Islam and the Black Defense League
also spoke in support of the initiative. |

The current Sec. of State, Bill Jones (R), had a press conference
at 1:45 p.m. to discuss his opposition to any amendments to the 3-strikes law
as put forth in the proposed inititiative. |
