Dear Assemblymember:
I am writing to express my views as a
concerned citizen. I believe the public supported the Three Strikes law as a
way to protect the innocent from murderers, rapists and sexual molesters. The
facts show overwhelmingly (70%) that it is the minor offender and their
families that face the harsh realities of the Three Strikes law. We are filling
our prisons with people serving life sentences for drug problems and other
minor offenses at the taxpayers' expense when treatment and rehabilitation have
proven more effective.
Many say it is the will of the people, but this
was certainly not my intent. I am very concerned that California's prison
budget is exceeding the budget of higher education.
I am in favor of
legislation which limits the application of the Three Strikes law to violent or
serious felonies. I believe this better benefits and serves the State of
California and represents the will of the people. I am asking you to support
common sense legislation and provide the people of the State of California with
solutions that build people and not prisons.
