Letter from New Yorker
Hello,
After seeing the story on 60 Minutes, I am thoroughly
convinced that the California 3 Strikes Law violates the constitutional
prohibition agains unreasonable punishment. On the 3d "strike", 25 years to
life becomes not a punishment for the last crime, but rather for the first two.
But, since the person already paid his debt to society, he should not be
punished again.
Of course, it should remain at the discretion of the
judge as to whether any third offense is indicative of recidivism and requires
longer incarceration, but this should in no way be prejudged by the state. 25
years to life for stealing a pizza is silly and unjust. Period.
Although I don't live in your state, I am troubled that this situation
exists in my country.
Repeal the law!
