Three Strikes law unnecessarily punitive

'Three Strikes law unnecessarily punitive'
I'm writing to thank the NC Times for the concern and challenge expressed
in the Sept 5 editorial regarding Senate Bill 873. ('Take a new look at 3
strikes') Our current three-strikes laws are unnecessarily harsh, and I have no
doubt a task force study will confirm this. Unfortunately, our elected
officials seem to need encouragement from the people of California to
investigate what this law is doing to some of our families. Families that have
already suffered the tragedy of alcoholism and drug addiction are now being
further tormented by the horror these laws have brought them. Mothers, fathers,
grandparents and children all live in fear of what may happen to their errant
loved one or with the horror of what has already happened to them.
Our
elected officials need to hear from us. They are afraid to act on their own.
Their common sense, if they had any has failed them and us.
