3-Strike Stories: Mario Enriquez
My name is Mario Enriquez. I've been
convicted on a D.U.I. on three strike in '95"
and was sentence first on the new law in San ta Clara County to 25 years to life. Now that
I came back on appeal on the 3 strike on May 9, 1996. I've
gone threw a new trial and lost again. Now waiting on sentencing on the 26 of this month
with support and friends threw out the community and hoping support from all over Northern
Calif. Who amend California's Three Strikes Law.
I am writing to take interview on any news letters or papers and help support another like
me, with non-violent offenders as ne in this case. I am in the case law people vs. Mario
Enriquez No. H013717.
A jury in November of 95 convicted me of driving under the influence of PCP after I
and a friend drove 25 to 50 yards from the front of her parents home to their driveway,
there we were arrested in June. The reality of the situation is that for every yard of
asphalt we traveled that day, I got a year in prison. I had 3 prior conviction for driving
under the influence, which elevated the latest crime to a felony. My previous convictions,
all since 1979, include one count of assault with a deadly weapon. I was convicted in 1988
of assaulting a customer with a knife outside a pizza parlor. That was my past. I admit I'm a drug addict and an alcoholic, but that's all. I could accept some lenient time but not 25
years to life for this charge. I never imagined being behind prison walls the rest of my
life.
